There is a disease that kills the Cavendish banana. Biologists are working on other varieties that are resistant. This has happened before. In the early 1900's the Big Mike banana was wiped out by disease. That's when the Cavendish banana became popular. I think some other variety will be discovered in time.

read an article that it will because it does not reproduce sexually (theory of evolution) and so more susceptible to diseases... although there are other types of bananas (not the yellow ones we eat) that have bigger seeds and taste slightly different that could survive... wait i'll dig around my room to find that article
