The third word in "the English language" is language. It's a trick question and it's been around for a long time. It's all in how it's said. There is no third word ending in "gry".

Solving the Mystery of Three Words Ending in -gry
"There are three words in the English language that end in GRY. Two are HUNGRY and ANGRY. The third one everyone uses every day and knows what it stands for. If you listened carefully, I already told you what the word is."

So, why then does this riddle continue to mystify even the hardiest puzzle-solvers? Simple! It's because the riddle itself is usually asked INCORRECTLY! The way this famous riddle is almost always told, there IS no way to answer correctly, because there is no third word that ends in "gry"! If any of your friends starts to ask you this riddle by saying, "There are three words in the English language that end in "gry" - stop them immediately - they are wrong.

The riddle was originally asked this way - and this is the correct way (and the ONLY way) to ask it:

"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in 'the English language'. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

It's a deceptive question, because the first two sentences have NOTHING to do with the actual riddle. Start off with the third sentence, and the riddle is then solvable. Here is the solution:

"There are three words in 'the English language'. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day.":

Word #1 = the
Word #2 = English
Word #3 = language

"language" is the third word.

Therefore, the answer is "language". ("language" being the third word, is a word you use every day).

Finally, we can all rest easier now.

The actual question goes like this. "There are three words in the English language ending with -gry. One is "hungry", the other is "angry". What is the third word in the English language? If you listened carefully, I have already given you the answer."

The question is "What is the third word in the English language?" "The English language"... Get it? the third word is "language".

I don't think that you have the wording correct but the answer is language because of the first part of the riddle. There are 3 words in "The English Language" - the 3rd word is language.

Basically the joke can be "translated" like this:

There are three words in "The English Language" ending in "-gry"

One is hungry
One is angry

What is the third word?

So they're saying the third "word" in "the English Language" is "language". [ (1) the (2) English (3) language ]

hope that helps.

I do agree though - it really is a stupid joke....
