It`s because of the fermentation process, light bottles let the wine go sour quickly.

I think it's so the red wine stays in a dark environment as not to damage the tannins in the wine

the green bottle keeps the colour of the wine from being bleached by the sun light.

Because vines appaer green from afar and the wine comes from this green plant. It is just logical that it should be served in something green. i.a. the green red wine bottle.

I prefer to drink white wine and because I live in Cape Town near the South African wine estates I have a lot to choose from.

Good wine will always come in a dark tinted bottle so that sunlight will not damage the wine.

It's not always in green bottles. Sometimes brown bottles and sometimes white boxes. Go figure.

All alcohol is damaged by UV, but esp wine - hence why it is in darkened bottles.
