1. to become responsible 2.trust
but we also forget that the older siblings need a break somethimes and we take for granted that they won't harm them(aggrivate, or be bossy) but we fail to realize that they do become agitated with the younger ones because they are always with them and they have too. You should learn to treat it as a job for the older ones if you are teaching them to be responsibe not that they are being the parent because you aren't there. for once sit back and look at the relationship and how the older one treats the younger ones when u are there..... you'll see u in them because they'll sometimes continue the authoritive behavior while u are there.........sometimes get a sitter

You don't state the ages, but at 13, I was full time baby sitter to 3-4 month old brother, had no problems...I cared for the child because I was expected to. You do not state the ages here, so what do you want to know?

1) there is no other adult (family and friends) they could entrust the young children

2) to save $$

but i do think that if the older sibling is not big enough, there should still be other adults available.

They don't want to pay for someone to take care of their children.
It's better for a sibling to take care of a child/children than a stranger.
