I find that high-energy cardio works REAL well. Something like "TaeBo" or a "cardio-kickbox". Many have both basic & advanced videos (for home or a vcr at the gym), or such classes somewhere. Might I suggest also doing it w/ a friend or friends, somebody who'll keep you accountable to go when you're not feeling up to it (and vice-versa).
The reason I like these so much is b/c when I was doing them, I was in some of the best shape I'd been in in a long time. You work literally every part of your body: strengthening, cardiovascular, endurance, toning, weight loss (fat), muscle gain (remember, muscles weigh more than fat), really, everything. And like I said, it's actually more fun w/ a friend, or a group.

Circuit training with an emphasis on core exercises. You basically combine weights with cardio which always produces the best results. Strenthening your core leads to proper posture which leads to better development of all your muscles. Try to use free weights as much as possible (machines can be dangerous over time) and work multiple muscle groups at once.

Not only is a consistent practitioner toned, but also have greater strength and flexibility.

Very affordable too: all one needs is a non-slip mat.
