Well, how basic are we talking here? Besides food, clothing and shelter, I think the most important thing a child needs is to be loved.

Depending on the age of the children, firstly younger ones would love the park and the beach... so would the older ones as long as they can take a friend or have some me time if they can be trusted to do a little exploring on their own. If you have the $$$$$ take them to the movies and McDonalds or to an amusement park or parlor. Go to the local video shop and hire some DVDs and have a movie night at home.... as i said depending of the children
