The first thing you really need to do is get involved with someone who already practices falconry and see if it is right for you. In the states you do need a license to be a falconer which you get after a certain amount of apprenticeship, however in England you don't. The best bird to start with is usually the Harris Hawk, they are more intelligent than most birds their size and live in family groups in the wild so are more sociable. It is best to get some form of tuition before you consider getting a bird, and also a good book, I recommend "training birds of prey" by Jemima Parry-Jones, It's a simple step by step guide that you can refer to throughout your training. Don't go getting a bird without tuition, I have seen people who just go out and get a kestrel, then kill it because they didn't feed it properly or loose it.
