Your programs won't be restored by deleting Windows XP, when you install XP you delete all references to the programs you had.

Meaning, everytime you install any application, the setup copies several files into the Windows folder, then it references it's app with those files.

When you installed XP, the XP setup deleted all those references and probably copied the same files your apps used but newer.

So, the solution for you to have those programs back is to install them into Windows XP.

First off.... OUCH
Hmm ok.. here's the thing, yes your installed programs are still in tact but any of them which did not run independantly in their own directory are going to be messed up in some degree.
Say one of them had configuration files store in the windows\system\ directory, those are now gone, any which had registration entries in you old 98 registry are gone.

After you've reinstalled 98 your only option is to dig into their installation directories and run each program to see if it starts up normally. All of their shortcuts and menu items need to be recreated so don't waste time looking for them unless you backed them up.

For programs that no longer run properly you need to reinstall them.

I HIGHLY suggest that you leave all your programs where they are and reinstall them on top of their original installations, this will overwrite existing files while maintaining any additional ones created by you from normal use.

However inconvient this is I'd leave anything alone that still runs fine in the end.

When it's all said and done, you really need to buy a new system, I'm going on the assumption you removed XP because this system couldn't handle it. 98 while an ok operating system for it's time is no longer a suitable system for use.

Sorry mate but the files/ programs cannot be restored. As the programs u installed were in the program files folder and this folder updates it self everytime you re-fresh your windows or change the windows version.

You might need to re-install all those programs/softwares again.
