I'd give it at least a week. It's a long, long road, and rough in spots, and there's a lot to see and do. Or take a month, and include places somewhat off the line, such as the Grand Canyon.

Sorry to tell you this, but Route 66 is but small chunks preserved by historical societies, in the various towns connected to I-40. Pretty good stretch of "Root" 66 outside Tucumcari, NM. There is the Business Loop 66 which runs for about 5-6 blocks in Amarillo, TX. There were a couple of detours in AZ.

PBS used to have a video for sale about Great American Drives.
