We have a male beagle about 3 months old. He squats to pee like a female. I know that puppies do this and it's normal. I just want to know when he is going to start lifting his leg like a big guy. Is this something they learn from other dogs, cause he's not really around other dogs. Will he just grow out of it? Or is this something that some males just do - a personal preference. Or, maybe, just a beagle preference.

usually a dog will lift its leg to pee when it is 6-9 months. My vet says when a male starts to lift his leg to pee, thats a good time to get him fixed, if you are going to do that. My golden retreiver (male) is 2, and he learned to pee from my girl jack russell. He will lift his leg to pee, but only if he's in the front yard where people can see him. If he's in the backyard (fenced in) he will squat. I guess he's just weird

Puppies always squat to pee. It is not a breed thing or not necessarily a boy or girl thing. I know of a girl dog who pees like a boy!

Its ok if your dog continues to squat to pee. This is also a sign of submission. I have a friend who is a dog trainer, and she has trained her dogs not to lift there leg. Its another way she makes sure that she is the alpha dog. So don't make it such a big deal. Its ok.

He will eventually lift his leg: maybe by 6 months old. But he'll still squat often, even after 3 years if he's like my Golden Retriever. It's OK. Don't worry. He might learn it from other dogs or on his own.

I have a ten year old male Rottie that has never lifted his leg when he pees. I also had a Yorkie (R.I.P) that didn't start lifting his leg until he was about 2 years old and even then he would still sometimes squat. I really don't know the reason.

Anytime after 6 months he will start peeing like a proper male dog. It isn't common for a dog to keep squatting after they are a year old but occasionally one never grows out of it. Your dog will most likely be spraying bushes before you know it.

I know some adult male dogs that still squat occasionally. Yes he will most likely grow out of it. It's not a beagle thing, it's a puppy thing.

It doesn't matter if he squats to pee, it doesn't make him a sissy in any way!! My 5yr old lab still 'squats' to pee coz he paper-trained since young, he does it even when he's outside. People are 'marvelled' at how I can train my dog not to lift his leg while peeing. Unless you bring your dog out everyday for his bizs, imagine he lifts his leg and leans aginst your wall to pee. The wall will be full of his pee! So don't worry, there's nothing wrong with your dog.

my family had a dog up until just before last christmas (he had a tumor in his chest and sadly, he passed away) that we were raising to be a leader dog way back when he was a puppy, fortunately he was rejected due to food allergies and a hip issue so we got to keep him. anyhow, getting to the point, the leader dog for the blind school "fixes" all the dogs after their year of training (the first year of their life minus the first month or 2), whether they become leader dogs or are rejected. our dog was a male, and he squatted like females do his whole life (10 years), but it's nothing to worry about, it just means he prefers to do it that way.

Beagles have shorter legs, maybe it's to much schlep for him to lift.
My male dog squatted and peed until his dying day (at the ripe old doggy age of 16!)
My dad use to joke and say, out of the whole litter, we got the drag queen!
