Cilantro and a squeeze of lemon juice. Next time sautee the sweet potato with some onion and curry powder before adding the lentils and stock/water. The cilantro and squeeze of lemon will compliment it nicely.

Open a jar or pinch a bit of what ever you are thinking of adding , give it a sniff, give the soup a sniff, back and forth until you can decide, ya, that might work. Then adjust very slowly in small amounts.

Personally, I find basic salt and pepper makes enough of a difference in most soups when it seems something is missing.

What about curry powder? It works wonderfully with both lentils and sweet potatoes. You could also try a blend of chili powder and cumin if you don't like curry.

Fresh minced chives or fresh parsley, minced fresh garlic, ground black pepper, diced brown or white onions (at least one large or a medium and a half one), cayanne pepper, and a 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add 1 to 2 bay leaves when cooking it and remove them just before serving.

Personally I go with either ground CUMIN for a more 'earthy' taste or a little fresh red chilli to 'pep' it up a bit.

FRESH corriander is also really good - but can be a little overpowering for some peoples taste.

Hing and cumin( seeds or better the leaves).
A dash of the former.
Be more generous with the latter

maybe nutmeg, or cumin, perhaps even a touch of ginger but not all at the same time :-) you might even be able to try a little sweet chili.
