Bronchitis is, typically, "acute" - meaning that it's not long-tmer ("chronic"). So, if it's been happening for a long time, it's likely not bronchitis, though bronchitis can take a few months to get over, especially if it's untreated.

If he's only getting a coughing fit in the middle of the night, it's possible that he's allergic to something in his bedding, though if he's exposed to it during other parts of the day, he probably would react to it then as well.

I second the recommendation to take him to a doctor and have him get a check-up. The doc will be able to listen to his lung sounds and should be able to get a better sense of what's causing the coughing.

Yes, your son needs to see a doctor.

It sounds more like asthma. Next time just get him to sit upright and see if he gets a little better. Is the cough accompanied by breathlessness too? And a wheezing sound? Then it is probably asthma.

BUT the key thing is- How long has he had this? If it is just 4 or 5 days, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Both asthma and bronchitis are treatable.

For this age, the doctor might suggest a nebulizer for asthma. If you have health insurance, the nebulizer itself is often free. You just need to pay for the medicine that you have to use regularly.

Are there any pets in your home? Any plants? What kind of mattress and pillows does he sleep on?
The best way to deal with allergies, other than taking shots,is to make sure the environment is as dust free as possible! Preferably, NO carpets in the child's room! Or anything else that collects dust! Also,NO kind of deoderizers, perfumes,or certain cleaners!! Any smokers in your family? Smoke is BAD for anyone with allergys and asthma!

Try a humidifier or air purifier. It could be croup, asthma, or allergies to mold, dust mites-anything. Make sure his bedding is always clean and that his room is dust-free.

The humidifier/purifier might cost some money but in the long run it will be worth it.

Asthma feels like youre breathing through a collapsed straw, so it's probably not that. You might want to go to the Dr though, sounds like an allergy.

start by getting an air purifier, could be the dust and stuff in the air is irritating him while he's sleeping. also try vacuuming the mattress, and get an allergy cover for the pillow ( walmart). if that doesn't seem to help, take him to the doctor, could be simple allergies.
