I have microsoft ME, the crappiest program ever made I believe. I downloaded software for a lexmark printer, and now the computer will not boot up, it just has the windows me screen and makes a bunch of noise. If I push escape, it says, please wait while setup updates your configuration files, this may take a few minutes... then, it says Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2 , it continues to display this message over and over until the end of time. Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this?? Please help me!!!!!

It won't even boot up in safe mode. If I do download a new program, like XP, will I be able to use a program I had installed previously. I really need to use a mortgage program which is stuck in my crappy system. Any advise?

If you install Windows XP or Windows 2000 you can choose to do an upgrade installation. That will keep all the files you had on the computer.

Windows Me is the biggest piece of garbage Microsoft ever produced, but if you have the Me CD there may be an option to do a repair installation.

Continually press F5 or F8 (I can't remember which) while the computer is booting. Select Safe Mode from the menu. The computer should now boot in safe mode. Then open System Restore and roll back the driver.

If that doesn't work, you could try searching on the website you got the driver from to see if it's a known issue. If not, you might have to restore your system from a backup. If you don't make regular backups (not very wise) then you'll have to re-install the operating system. While you're at it, you might as well upgrade to XP if you've got it, or maybe even try Linux out (http://www.kubuntu.org/).

First of all any idiot that tells you to put XP on a machine meant for ME is to be ignored. If you have to use MS crap install Win2000. Its not as good as Win98 but at least its not the garbage that XP is. Really it would be better to install Linux but I have the feeling that you might not want to do that. There are places that sell everything you need. One place is techvillageonline@yahoo.com they send out a weekly newsletter of software for sale and you can contact them directly anytime.

Drop it out of a window and put it out of its misery.

Otherwise format your hard drive and install a REAL operating system. Good luck.
