Bound's hubby here:

The only major difference between these two Remingtons, is the action design, neither of which will affect the rifles use for deer hunting.

The Remington 798 is a Mauser Model 98 being (recently) manufactured (probably under license) by Remington. The walnut stock is traditional, something to compliment the design. There are two major points to keep in mind about the 798 ... the bolt coc ks on opening and the bolt can be removed from the action by a small lever on the left side of the receiver.

The Remington Model 700 is a proprietary design manufactured by Remington since about the time of World War II. The laminated stock is less susceptible to swelling than a traditional wood stock, which enhances accuracy. Unlike the Mauser 98 design, the Remington 700's bolt coc ks on closing, allowing a smoother bolt operation, and the bolt is removed from the action by pushing a small button forward of the trigger in the trigger guard ... reducing the chance of accidentally removing the bolt from the rifle.

The 700 DM is a lightweight system which comes with a 22" barrel and a rate of twist between 9" and 10". This rifle can be purchased for around $800 RRP. The 798 is modelled from the German WW2 Mauser K98. It is respectively heavy than the 700 series and comes with barrel ranging from 22" to 26", because of this extension in the barrel it makes it more efficient in accuracy and the rate of twist is increase to between 9" and 14". Dependant on what calibre you wish to buy the price will vary, going from a .243 Winchester for $599, to a .458 Win Mag for $839.

I WOULD GO WITH THE 700 MOUNTAIN. YOU GET A WALNUT STOCK VS A LAMINATE STOCK ON THE 798. YOU GET A DETACHABLE BOX MAG VS HINGED FLOOR PLATE ON THE 798. YOU GET A EBONY FOREND TIP AND ALSO A CHEEKPIECE. THE OVERALL FEEL AND BALANCE OF THE 700 MOUNTAIN IS BETTER THAN THE 798. IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR $$$ SITUATION. I WOULD SPEND MORE FOR THE ADDED FEATURES. PERFORMANCE WISE, THEY ARE BOTH FINE FOR HARVESTING DEER. BOTH ACTIONS ARE TRIED AND TRUE.

BY THE WAY: GOOD ANSWER, BRUNETTE. GO WITH THE REMI? WOULD YOU? THAT WAS REALLY INFORMATIVE, CONSIDERING THEY ARE BOTH REMINGTONS.

i take it we are talking about a 222, when you say the 798. In my opinion it is a much more sufficient killer than the 700, But thats me,it works on a combination of things, as you know it has alot to do with the grain of bullet used as well as fps(verlocity ratio) I would talk to your local estate manager,or game keeper, ask there opinion. You could always wright into sporting gun, or visit the BASC website as well www.basc.org.uk/
