In terms of cutting and folding cardboard, it is easier to create a rigid cuboid shape than a short fat cylinder shape, so they are cheaper to manufacture and sell (even if the circle option will actually use less cardboard.)

In terms of storage, it doesn't save any space because when you stack it up you can't squeeze more boxes in the same volume of space anyway. The dead space is within the box when you use square boxes and outside the box when you use cirular boxes.

The question you really want to ask is - why not make pizzas square so you waste less space in the pizza box?

If the box was a circle and it was conformed entirely around the pizza, it would be harder for those Sunday afternoon football watchers to just reach in and sling a piece out. They would have to actually take their eyes off the game because it would take some "effort" to get the pizza out of the round box.

So, the answer is.......they put pizza in a square box in the name of football.

because making a cardboard container in the shape of a circle is a lot more difficult. bear in mind that the container has to be made from a single piece of cardbard, not two pieces like a box of chocolates. the corners of a pizza box (inside) are technically wasted, but a lot of time and effort is saved by simply making it in the shape of a square. also, it is a lot easier to transport and store containers in the shape of a box.

Is this one of those questions like why do hot dogs come in packs of ten when hot dog buns come in packs of eight?

I believe the square box is just a throw-back from the early days of pizza. And look, Domino's does come in a roundish box. In this society, square boxes are probably just cheaper.

because if it was a circle the pizza might not slide all over the place. and who likes a pizza with the cheese, etc actually on the crust where it's suppossed to be?

It is more economic to have a square box that is easily manufactured by cardboard folding. Round boxes are more expensive to manufacture.
