Hello... After my 2 oldest daughters go off to school my youngest daughter (age 2) sits at the table with her cup of orange juice with a straw in it. She sits there while I get ready in the bathroom. I can hear her the whole time. For several days in a row she would scream and when I'd come around the corner I would see our cat playing with Alaina's straw on the kitchen floor. This has happened many days in a row. I decided to hide and watch this morning. Well, I witnessed the cat get up on the table and go straight for the straw. She batted at it until she got it out of the cup and took it to the floor. Alaina screamed until I made her laugh about it. It is adorable! But, I want her to stop. I don't want her on the table! Our cat doesn't do this while others are around... Only Alaina. It's like Scruffy is teasing Alaina. Any ideas?

I should have added earlier that I did give Scruffy her own straw (the one she stole) :) And gave Alaina a new one. Scruffy took that one too. :) She's a wonderful cat and I don't mind her playing but, I don't want her on the table. Thanks, I hope that helped clear up a few things.

Pets are like kids, they will test their parent/owner and see how much they can get away with. As with any negative behavior there should be a negative reaction. Try waiting behind a door when you leave the room, and when the cat jumps up on the table, using a squirt bottle, spray the cat while at the same time you pull the trigger say loudly "NO". After a few times the cat should stop.

Hahaha, our male is like that. Pens, foam darts, straws....he can't get enough.
Using a spray bottle when the cat gets on the table would work, but only if you start hiding every morning and spray her with it as soon as she gets up there.
If you want a deterent what will work when you're not around, there's SSSCat Spray, the Tattle Tale Alarm....I'm sure there are more. You can see 'em here:

And why not keep a straw or two on the floor for Scruffy?:)

Have you tried giving the cat it's own straw to play with while other straws are out? My kitten loves to play with straws, so I gave him his own. Or maybe get one of those cups that has a straw securely in the lid. The cat might give up if it can't get the straw out.
I've also heard of putting aluminum pie plates on counters and tables to scare a cat when they jump up. I use a spray bottle with water to reinforce the no cats on the counter rule.

Just give the cat her own straw when your daughter is drinking at the table. This way she will have her own to play with and leave your daughters along. Cats love to play with straws its a cheap fun toy for them. Don't punish your cat...

I think the two of them have a nice relationship going. A straw is a very attractive toy for a cat. Maybe when you give the juice to your daughter you should simultaneously give a straw to your cat to play with.

wrap a piece of double stick tape around a section of the straw. Cats don't like anything sticky on their paws, so after she swipes at it a few times and her paws get a little sticky, she will learn to leave it alone.

hide again and when the cat jumps up - squirt her with water from a squirt bottle. you can also alternate with shaking a soda can with coins or screws in it. The cat will then associate jumping up there with the unpleasantry of the shake can or water and will stop. It may take a few repeated days of doing this to get through to her

Get a spray bottle with water in it and have your little one spray the cat. The cat will not forget, and it will not hurt it either. Plus kids love water, so try and make a game of it.

Get a squirt bottle, and every time the kitty gets on the table, spray her. She will get the message. PS: Make sure you don't spray your daughter!!
