On Yahoo!Answers I find certain questions being asked repeatedly which is simply a reflection of new people participating. A couple of common question amounts to "How do I lose weight," or more specifically, "How do I lose abdominal fat?" I have gotten very positive responses from my answers when I paused to reply (and now beginning to get "It works!" emails that are very gratifying. I like helping people)... so have recently decided to put a good solid answer on my Yahoo!360 Blog (September 10) that I can point people to. These are my thoughts as a physician and athlete.
Don't target losing more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.
There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.
The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.
Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.
To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.
For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.
Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.
There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.
If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

The following is not medical advice:
If you live alone, you have a choice on what types of food you bring into your home to eat and when and how much you will eat it. If you live with others, ask them to help you so you can stay healthy. I once lost weight by eating a small meal at breakfast at about 9am, ate a large lunch with a dessert between 11 and 12 noon (knowing that I would work off those extra calories through the day), a small snack between 2 and 3, another small snack between 5:30 and 6:30 (some people go ahead and eat dinner at that time, but I always was hungry later that evening) and dinner between 8 and 9 with no sweets or junk food, only a side fruit cup or fresh fruit, going to sleep around 11pm AND with morning exercise to a tape or DVD that I liked, for me it was either belly dancing, Taebo, or Pilates-only 3 times a week. Some people walk daily. Yes, exercise is necessary. Listen to your body; when you get hungry between well-balanced and proportioned meals, you should grab a small healthy snack instead of starving until the next meal and then having to eat a pile of food.

The only healthy way to lose weight is to eat smaller meals 5-6 times a day. About 3 hours apart eat: A healthy breakfast, a small snack, a healthy lunch, a small snack, a healthy dinner, a small snack. This keeps your body from storing fat as it goes through the hunger cycle. It will also keep you from feeling hungry. Drink lots of water and watch portions. Do not eat within 3 hours of going to bed and always eat breakfast within 1 hour of waking. Get some exercise daily. The most important thing is to realize that your body can only look like what is was genetically meant to. Not everyone will be size 4 so accept your body for what it is and work with what you have.

I will try to keep it simple. Your metabolism is basically the rate at which your body burns calories to create energy. So the faster your metabolism, the faster you burn calories and the easier it is to lose unwanted weight. To boost your metabolism naturally you just need to eat the right foods.
You can sit down and literally eat a 1,000-calorie dinner and yet be absolutely starving just a few hours later and the reason is simple: Because your body didnt get what it needed in those 1,000 calories so it sends signals to your brain telling you to ingest more calories and thus, the late-night cravings. That means that the surest way to end those late-night cravings and keep your weight loss goals on track is to eat a more balanced, nutritious diet that actually gives your body what it needs.
It's VERY EASY to lose weight if you eat the right foods. Check out Dr. Charles Livingston's video here: http://www.sexyjese.com - it will blow your mind.

This is what worked for me. I did 200 minutes of cardio every week. I did planks and other abs exercises on alternate days. On training days, I did 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then weight training, followed by more cardio.
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Good luck!

I don't think there's any easy way to lose weight. Eating right is important, but you also need to find out why you gain weight or why you can't lose weight. If you don't seek professional help, it'll take you more time and efforts to reach your goal. So, I'd suggest that you sought professional advice. Don't trust any ads or commercials. They don't tell the truth.

Im a really believer on exercises, and the more the active you can be in your every day, walking instead of going by car, even doing house work, that makes your metabolism active too. Also get a professional help but you have to know that taking those pounds away.

No diet is the best diet. Just eat (smaller) healthier meals (5- 6 per day) Drink water during the day, orange juice or fruit juice with all meals. (helps to absorb iron in meals and vitamin c) drink green tea or coffee or substitute drink with low fat or skinny milk. (Canned fruit in natural juice is best) Breakfast; 1 piece of fresh fruit or cereal with skinny or low fat milk. Morning tea; 1 piece of fresh or canned fruit or biscuit with low fat cheese, or low fat no added sugar yogurt. Lunch; 1 sandwich or plate of soup or salad with meat or chicken or fish, Afternoon tea; the same as morning tea. Dinner; meat, or fish or chicken with salad or vegetables or both. Supper; If you are a poor sleeper or not very over weight. porridge; low fat cereal, yogurt or hot chocolate milk (all of these are relaxing and light on your stomach in the evening) Other wise try to eat your last main meal early (5.30 - 7pm) or only eat supper on days you have been working really hard or missed a meal during the day. If you want to loose weight quickly; stick to regular small meals at regular times each day and you will go to the toilet regularly. Increase your daily exercise to walking, swimming, bike riding or whatever you like to increase your heart rate for at least 20 - 40 minutes straight. It has worked for me and my whole extended family that are all healthy, and slim.
