You're talking about feminist activists, right? Not the everyday woman who believes in women's rights.
My experience is that feminist activism and lesbian activism are often intertwined. For that reason, I agree with your observation that many feminist activists do have a masculine appearance.
You'll probably get some nasty responses to your question, but I hope not. It's a legitimate one.

Man.......you all need to get a clue. Feminists don't usually look like men, that's just how they are portrayed on TV and in movies, it's a stereotype. They're not all lesbians either, stereotype. They don't hate men, stereotype. Actually a lot of men consider themselves feminists, and if some of you get with the times, and learn a little maybe you'd know what feminism really means. Definition- feminism: 1. the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
2. (sometimes initial capital letter) an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.
3. feminine character.

So much of what women do is to look attractive for men that when they decide to let themselves look natural-no makeup-no shaving-no plucking-no bleaching-no corseting-no curling and all the other things that are deemed attractive on a society- by- society basis it comes as a shock. Men don't understand that that's what we all look like and the "feminized' version you see takes an ungodly amount of time and money.
I think feminine traits should be given equal value. That means while caring for children a parent (either sex) should be allowed social security credits, and right now the masculine' traits of war and physical strengths are given a disproportionate value.

if a Femanist looks Masculine, then what is the opposite? A Femanist who is Femanine? or a Male who has Fem characteristics...hmmmm so there is gender even in a homosexual relationship...interesting. Sounds almost normal!
I personally believe too much is made of something that has been around since a female first cut a Male off! Should we not focus on the person specific rather than the gender bending? A Psychologist friend explained to me that there are boy brains and girl brains, and sometimes a girl brain ends up in a boy body and vis versa...." They " should be treated according to whom they beleive themselves to be, and not societies manifestation without facts.
P.S. I am hetrosexual! Actually a Lesbian in a Man's body.

Oh, puhleeze, this question is the same one that was asked in the Sixties. If you saw a picture of me, you would not say that I was masculine looking. You would want to date me and would be so busy trying to do that...that you wouldn't even know that I am a feminist.
....also one direction that early feminism took by necessity was to show equality with men by being like men. They had to do that to compete on many levels. Now, the feminists come in all shapes, sizes and philosophies and bring unique qualities of being a woman to their socio-political struggle.

I don't think you are talking about feminists.
Even a man can be a feminist, believing women have been oppressed for a long time, and working to ensure their rights, and freedoms.
A masculine woman is just that.

Ugh... feminists do no longer many times look like adult men... i'm a feminist... I even have an hourglass determine, a female face, I positioned on makeup, I positioned on mini skirts... feminists do no longer prefer to be adult men (different than those human beings who're transgendered). We basically choose women human beings to be equivalent to adult men.

You're thinking of equal rights people. Feminists think that all men should be killed and that women should learn to procreate like ameoba by dividing.
Equal rights campaigners are great, feminists need removing to a small island to discover whether or not they can exist just on 'girl power'.
Sorry, I just hate them so much.

Because we think that everything assertive is masculine. Therefore an assertive woman must be masculine. The onus in on the beholder.
