I would say the count would be very high consider "American Idol" has been around and brings hope for them. If, they don't get the vote for the top idol they least hope they get the exposure and that will put them on the map.

i would say a lot of teens would like to be in the music business, but most of them aren't "trying". Still, the number of people trying to do anything professionally is way high. The same way that most of the football players in your highschool won't play college football and most of them won't play for the NFL, most people who think they can sing won't put in the work to get local work and most of them won't go beyond a certain amount of local success.

If you're content to be successful locally or on a cruise ship, there are many opportunities to get paying work in music.
If you are looking for superstar status you need to be really talented (usually, there are the britney spears exceptions), if you're a girl you need to be very attractive and thin, and it wouldn't hurt to move to LA, Nashville or New York.
If you're a singer/songwriter, the vocal talent and visual appeal aren't quite as necessary, but they still help. And of course, luck is a huge factor.

If you just love music, by all means do it, but don't hang your future on superstar status.

All of them. Most however don't realise that some musical training would be an advantage....
