It is my opinion that it is a matter of both upbringing and community values. However, I, as a northerner, do not consider other northerners rude and abrasive. I consider southerners too forward and pushy. This is merely a matter culture. In the south, people are raised to be friendly and forward, whereas in the north the culture leans towards a more formal approach. I am not a touchy feely person and prefer to less open, thus I prefer the northern formalities to southern hospitality. It is not that the southerner do it wrong, nor is it that the northerners do it wrong, it is that both do it differently and each finds the other strange.

Climate is my theory.... While I take great pride in being a born-and-raised Virginian, the non-Southerners I've met have been wonderful people, for the most part.

I figure the cold climate up north encouraged more large industry (more inside work), and discourages people from being outside too long, thus hurrying and rushing and wanting nothing more than for everybody to just get out of their way so they can get where they're going.

The South, on the other hand, has a good measure of hot humid days, which encourage a more laid-back approach, because it's just too hot to get worked up over anything, or hurry, or even talk very quickly... The South is also more of the Bible Belt, and that (especially when Sunday School has been taught by the same dear old lady for the past fifty years) helps preserve more of the old courtesy.

As a Yankee who spent a summer in south Carolina let me say that Southerners are more polite than us but that's as far as it goes. Its not heartfelt or meant as anything beyond the words.

Why do southerners think it's polite and hospitable to call others rude and abrasive?

Answer that one.

the major note is "typically," because as a fashion to typically categorize human beings you should generalize, it quite is a fallacy. extra, each and all and sundry in the international might want to have a special degree of courtesy. you would possibly want to continually construct a quantitative study, yet when I were a guessing guy, i'd say that the outcomes might want to cumulatively teach human beings to be promptly in the approach "impolite" and "polite".

I've found that northerners are just more open and southernors tend to gossip and talk about people behind they're backs instead of telling it to there faces.

I'm not really sure. I have found that where I grew up, people where very friendly and helpful but when I moved north, the people were very rude and hateful. I don't know the reason. It's crazy actually, but I think they believe they are better and more smarter. Actually, it only makes them look more stupid and worse. That is the only answer I can come up with. Thank you.

I disagree with you. I have found just the opposite. I was born, and now live, in the north, and I was raised in the south. Southerners will kill you with kindness, but will avoid you most of the time. Northerners are more blunt, but will not blow you off.

First off southernors dont have slaves to do all their work... in that case i wouldn't be working my *** off everyday ....!!!!!!! that poor boy dont' know what hes talking about!
And second we like things peacefull. When you hear of a murder here in the south its like the world is coming to end. We dont try to shun you away and we are always happy when company comes to see us.....
