Is it now proper to single space between sentences, or, as I was always taught, should u always double space after a period?

In the world of word processing on the computer, we now have fonts where each letter takes up only as much room as it needs. You need only use one space between sentences. Here's a recent question from Y! Answers about the same thing:

Has something happened or been said that would make you think this is changing? I have yet to hear such news but if this has been suggested it's just another stupid issue that doesnt need another second of anyone's time. It goes along with people trying to change the way we spell nearly every word in the English language. I agree some words have spelling that makes no sense but c'mon. Leave it alone already, ya know.
