In the past, people didn't believe in germs, because they couldn't see them. Could there be a reason for evil that would satisy the scientific & religious communities?

I don't really know about evil, because I live in a different world from that, but I can tell you about negativity and pessimism.

In the office where I used to work, for years we had a great team of employees. We were upbeat and encouraged one another to do better. Then the company expanded and brought in 3 new people that were negative.

They would, jokingly, call you stupid or lazy or dumb. They "kidded" with each other this way. We'd say of someone making a mistake "well at least you made it a big one, no point in wasting time making small ones eh?" and laugh. They'd say "well I bet you feel like a total idiot and a fool, don't you wish the floor would swallow you up right now?" and laugh.

See the difference? Well, this spread until the entire company was that way, negative and insulting one another .... in fun. It no longer was a good place to work, but a stressful one and sure enough, the old employees left, the news ones stayed, and the company went under.

Evil "contagious" from what I see. From the religious point of looking at evil, it may be that evil is a condition of the heart, in the spiritual sense. So much violence, corruption, cheating, etc. going on at all levels of every society...and as things have gotten more coverage, news of more and more, people have accepted it. We get conditioned to it, and it's impact has less effect on us. We then spread evil, as it's contagious.
From the Scientific point of view, they would possibly think of evil as brain disorders, as there are so many real mental problems. Science probably would not really look at it the same way, as they see things untangible, such as evil, very differently. They would possibly NOT be able to see the degeneration of society in the same way that religionists do; who see evil as something within the heart and mind of the person. Science wouldn't see the "contagious" aspect of evil, perhaps.

Evil behavior can be relegated to emotional highs and lows created by imbalances in hormones. People who have certain disorders of the mind can do evil things because of the way their mind works. I don't think that you can catch Evil like the common cold but sometimes big groups of people can be influenced to do evil acts because of a powerful belief system created by those around them.

Evil is a judgement, not a substance. Each of us develops our own morals. When we form societies, we deal with other people with different morals. This usually causes some friction between people. After a while, people settle on some set of common morals that get instilled as laws in society. Those laws (and people's morals) evolve over time. Things that tend not to be productive in a society get deemed "evil" and those that benefit people tend to get deemed "good".

Hmm. Well, first you'd have to look at the fact that a lot of religions don't believe in evil. Then you'd have to define it precisely, in order to satisfy the scientific community--and that definition would have to be outlined outside of religious boundaries.

Interesting point. Evil tends to get worse as it continues... generational curse. Maybe one day genetics could show something. But for now I believe it is still by choice.
