my husband is a submariner and the air and gases inside are not very healthy. can this lead to our having a child with genetic defects?

Absolutely yes!! It can also lead to him getting cancer or leukemia, a blood cancer. He should at least take mega vitamins especially E and C and drink extra water.

Keep in mind submarines are afloat more than they are submerged. When afloat, fresh air is circulated.

Unless there is a leak of some genetically altering substance, which goes undetected for an unsafe period of time, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

Now, this is just my opinion, hopefully you'll find some actual statistics on this topic. But still, I feel your husband will be fine!

No! Unless he was exposed to an immense dose of radiation which is much more likely to leave him sterile than having a child with defects.
