I've tried all the usual sources (Ebay etc) and I want to get it working as I was given it for nowt.

Or, if you haven't already, try seeing if the manual is available on the Hitachi UK (or worldwide) site. If you email them, they may well have access to it, if it's not on there.
I've searched on https://merchant.satisfusion.com/sf/WarrantyCenter/registration/secure/Hitachi/Manuals/Search.jsp (Via http://www.hitachi.us/Apps/hitachicom/content.jsp?page=index.html&&path=jsp/hitachi/support/Manuals/) but can't find it? Are the numbers for the model correct / is it really old?

I cannot find this model on the hitachi site - did find it elsewhere, but not for free (see link below), better to contact hitachi customer service, they might send you one... (see 2n link below)
