Unless one of you are talkative, this will keep on happening. I'm more of a listener and prefer to talk to people who can just talk and talk and talk.
However, the first response you got on here, just ask her questions, is a good response. What has she experienced in life? Has she travelled anywhere? Ask her questions about that. What about her hobbies? People can usually talk about what they like doing or what interests them for hours. What are her hot buttons? Is she anti-Bush? Bring up the Foley scandal and see if she has an opinion about that.
Good luck!

Ok first it depends on how old you both are to ask certain questions!
However to keep the conversation going is easy!
First ask yourself how much do I know about her? Girls- Women love it when a guy is intune with what they like and what they do.
So you ask her questions like what is her favorite color? What does she do for fun? What is her favorite food? What is the craziest thing she had done in her life? What is something that she has never told anyone? Does she likes sports and if so what sport? When is her Birthday? What is her sign?
See you have to ask questions where she thinks that you are really wanting to know everything about her. For some girls it's hard to just start talking they need a guy who is out spoken to bring it out of them. Once you get her to answer questions that you want to know, then it will lead into more things to talk about. Just write down some question that you would like to know, and just ask her! Trust me you will have a lot to talk about after you do this. Just try it and let me know I wish you well. Someone has to start the conversation and who else but you, just ask all kinds of questions they will lead into more!
Good Luck,
I don't think you will need it,
Always Amy

If you are really interested in her and she in you, you both should have a lot to talk about... Tell her something trivial you've done that day or
about a conversation with someone on a topic that you think she would be interested in or
about how you feel when you hear a certain song or
what decision you've given
There are just a loooot of things to talk about if you are both interested in each other in everyway.

People are most interested in themselves. So let her talk around that. You just need more prompts...what do you enjoy doing what are you good at....what is your plan for...what makes you angry...what do you like doing on holiday...etc etc and just keep saying complimentary things from time to time :)
But , important to remember what she talks about (make notes if youre on the phone), and next time pick up the points she made...hey I liked that Idea you had the other day oh that was fiunny what you did with . mmmhh I like to do that too ...etc etc
Good luck my li'l brother :)

Maybe you should try meeting more and use body language to fill in the gaps in converation. You can't talk all the time...you just end up with a sore throat.

Ask open ended questions that demand long answers. For example: "How was your day" is close ended answer "okay."
"Tell me about your day." is open ended, "I woke up at 6:00'cause...then I had breakfast...then..."
"What you up to?" close ended answer "nothing/ talking to you."
"Tell me about your plans for tomorow." open ended "i'm going to...then i'm going to ...and..."
Open ended conversation starters
1. Tell me about
2. Describe...
3. How do you...
4. What do you think about...
