take the tour boat ride on the seine (bateau mouche). this will not be a get on get off affair. that would be the batobus. this way, you've seen, though from afar, the major sights of paris. a one day stay is not really ideal for shopping at galerie lafayette. buy a parisian version of a one day travel card (costs 5.50 euros) you can take the metro as often as you want. go to champs elysée, montmartre, places you won't see from the boat ride.

One day is rather short to visit Paris. If you've never been and are interested in having a quick look at the main monuments of Paris, then get a coach tour or use the RATP open double-decked OPEN TOUR : this should take half a day. The rest of the time, go for shopping (Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, ..) or along the Champs-Elysées, or visit the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, or the musée d'Orsay (impressionist painters).

Have a nice stay !

One of the best things to do is to go to Galleries Lafayette. There are wonderful shops inside this shopping center. In addition, there are gourmet shops and a cafe, which is really great too. I would recommend doing this in the morning, and for a light lunch.

Then, take the metro to Pigalle. Walk about 2 blocks to the funiculaire to Montmatre. There is a beautiful church up there - you can see all of Paris from up there. If you walk a few blocks more, there are the wonderful painters and artists of Montmatre (I think there is a Dali exhibition going on there). Some really nice cafes/restaurants for an early dinner, and lots of souvenir shops.
