So that any one at any level or education within that organisation will know that for this type of procedure, you look in this place, etc - it makes it all much simpler to understand if you only pick something up once a year. If you gave 10 people who couldn't communicate with each other a dull metal object and told them to mechanically polish it until they felt it would be acceptable to a purchaser you would find that all 10 metal objects were polished differently.

Now if you put all 10 polished objects in front of a purchaser and told them they had to buy each object individually but pay the same price for each one, how many do you think they would buy?

But if you took the same 10 people and gave them written instructions on how to polish the object, you would end up with 10 metal objects all alike. Would a purchaser be more likely to buy the objects knowing that they will all be exactly alike this time and every time?

Whether it's a precision part of machinery or an article of clothing, people want to know that each time they buy the object it will be consistantly the same quality as the previous one and the next one. To insure that, the people who manufacture the object must all know the rules to use in it's creation.

To do that, the rules must be understood and used by everyone all the time. Quality assurance means that it being done.

If you are tralking about ISO 9000, or BS5750, then it is about ensuring that you have certain systems in place, as well as ensuring that the paperwork is processed to a particular standard. This ensures that you are able to ensure that information is not lost, or that your procedures enable confidentiality, security and that basic questions posed by customers and auditors can be answered.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go spot some trains (Sad or what).
