We just cleaned out our parents house (they are in a retirement village). I found an old camera bag there with 3 cameras in it. Olympus and Pentax come to mind. There is also a tripod and several lenses (telephoto etc). He would have bought these in the 70,s. Are they worth anything, or should I just dump them?

Sorry, jeez I'm having PMT tonight. I am not destroying my parents memories. They have had about 10 cameras since these ones. There is no film in the cameras and they have been sitting in the same cupboard since 1982 or thereabouts. Now don't go giving me the shits. I'm heading for menopause and have little time for idiots

They are not likely to be worth too much. You could get a couple of bucks and find the cameras a new home if you sell on eBay. You could turn them over quickly at http://bhphotovideo.com or http://www.adorama.com or other places that state they are interested in buying used equipment. Don't expect a lot, though. I am not aware of any limited editions or anything from Pentax or Olympus that would have any serious value.
I like the above answers about donating them, if you can find the right place. We know that there are students who would dream of owning some of this equipment.

If they're from the 70's and your folks have used several other cameras since then, more likely than not those particular cameras are not collectors items - they're just old. Worth around U$100 to $300 for the bunch.
You could do a search on eBay and type in the details for each individual lens however, to see if you have a gem in the optics department.
Oh, and sorry for all the nitwits that answered your question off of the front page. With any luck, you'll get a few more sensible responses form other regulars in the Camera section.

Likely the cameras are not worth anything. Yet, they are probably still functional. If they are actual SLR cameras complete with a variety of lenses, don't throw them away. Donate them somewhere. Although this used equipment is not worth anything, buying NEW equipment can be quite expensive. Likely, there is some organization, somewhere (probably a school program) that would be thrilled to accept your old cameras.

They are definitely worth money, if they are in good working order. There a loads of people that collect camera out there. Look on the web, or go to an auction house near you. They may even have a specialized camera dept.

They are SLR, single lens reflex cameras more than likely.
I've seen them sell on EBay.
Due to the digital age they are not worth as much as they once were.

Preserve them instead of dumping them ..any how you need give food and cloths to them then let it be with you...please remember that those are 36 years old!! If you are certain in dumping them then better give them to any person who collects old cameras as hobby!!

Hi Jewel, rather than dumping them why don't you let your parents use them or give them to someone who might not be able to afford a camera. Oh wait, maybe that would also make you be sad to be an aussie, to do something good.
Adding to my answer - YOU SEEM LIKE AN AGGRESSIVE, SELFISH BIT*CH. I DON'T ENVY YOUR PARENTS OR YOUR FAMILY.
