I just adopted a cat last saturday and i have already brought her to my vet with a stool sample. He did not mention if she had worms, but gave me deworming medicine because the shelter did not. Anyway I do not go out of the way to smell her butt, but you can smell it from her just sitting on your lap or next to you. It is very bad. I have tried the Cat Wipes they sell at Petsmart and they do not work at all. She has diaherra and the vet has her on some special diet, but she had a smelly butt before i started this diet. I am going to call the vet today but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and have any ideas what it could be. Some people have said Worms but I do not see worms in her stool at all. Please help if you can.

thank you for the anal glands thing, I have not heard of that before. I will call the vet today and mention it to them. Its gotten to the point that I do not even want the cat next to me, which sucks because she is a lapcat. Thanks for the advice.

It could be that her anal glands are full & they just need expressing, Take her back to the vet & suggest this. If you have treated her for worms then it would not be worms.
If she has had runny stools then maybe it's caught up in her fur & making the wiff?

Give her a bath. Then, to express her anal glands, take a tissue to her butt and press (as in pinch) either side of her anus. The anal glands are positioned almost immediately on the left and right sides of the cat's anus. These will have a tiny duct hole each where natural anal gland secretions are exited. Sometimes, these ducts get impacted with dirt. Then the cat will scoot its butt accross the carpet or grass in an effort to relieve the discomfort.

If the anal glands is not the problem, could be intestinal. You mentioned she had diarrhea. The dewormer could be responsible for that. At anyrate, if the cat is eating well and is not depressed, then just wait a few days and give the problem a chance to resolve by itself. I had the same problem with the kitten we adopted when we first had her at home. But the stinky butt problem resolved itself after about a week.

Could very well be the anal glands like a dew others suggest. Also, since she has diarrhea, how long have you had her on this new diet? Because it can take a few days for things to settle again and her stool to be solid again.
The food you feed her has a lot to do with the way her stool smells, so I´d say, once her stool is solid again, I´d look into cat food types that can help with this. I live in Europe, so brand names might not be the same, but my local pet shop sells Eukanuba cat food, when I got my cat her stool smelt pretty bad, and the food I feed her now has really helped, now it is just a normal cat-poop smell. Ask the advice of your vet and pet shop employee.
