Yes, the Revelation of Jesus Christ is scary. But keep in mind that it's the ONLY book in the Bible that tells us we are BLESSED if we read and understand it (Rev. 1:3), because it gives us assurance of what is to come.
We don't know for sure why the apostle John was chosen to reveal this Revelation; we only know for sure that it was Jesus' will (John 21:22-23). John is described as the apostle whom Jesus loved (John 13:23 and 21:20); we also know John was the youngest of apostles, although he received the revelation soon before his death. My best guess is that Jesus intended this revelation to encourage His church after the loss of the last apostle, and to strengthen generations of believers to come -- including us!
The Revelation is quite complex and its full meaning cannot be adequately summarized here. There are a number of on-line study guides to it. Although I don't agree with each conclusion drawn by this author, I do recommend this Revelation study series, since it's easy to read and, in my own judgement, mostly accurate:

I encourage you to discard any fear you have about the Book of Revelation. That's exactly what Satan wants you to feel about it, so you become discouraged.
End time prophecy is a special interest of mine; if you EVER have any questions about it, please send me a message.
Peace and blessings.

John the Revelator was the last Apostle of Old, He was imprison on the Isles of Patmos, The people thought if they can put John there that he could not do any harm or in other words, They thought that his teachings will stop, little did they know that God set the scene for John to be Use mightyly & see these visions. Too many Christains today are afraid to read Revelation, saying that it is too hard to understand. If we have the Holy Ghost, It is NOT too hard to understand, I understand Revelation, To me, it is a love letter to the BRIDE.

The Earth will go through a major physical upheaval. The
release of billions of souls at once, will create a spiritual power
that will open the doors to other realities.
Isaiah 24:18.
This will cause trouble on this world like never seen before.
Accepting the survival of the spirit can help us to face this
bravely.
At some point, God/Allah will come and put a stop to it.
