Aside for being there for them on that day, which is all one could ask, I say the next thing you could do is find out where they are going on their honeymoon and call ahead and have them do a romantic something for them. Have them decorate the room with rose pedals, champagne. Or you could get them a breakfast in bed type of thing which would be much appreciated too. Or you could just always do the registry thing too. But thinking outside the box can earn you some real good friendship points.

I would say . time and any help that they may need . Other than that something they can use everyday or a nice set of sheets & a bedspread. Confonter for the bed. Or if they do not have much . A money order so they can buy what they need most.

You havent mentioned is your friend a guy or a girl .If it is a girl you could gift her a wedding greeting , well wishing card with some roses or even a watch or even a bracelet .
the best thing is you could get your friend and his or her fiance a twin watch set with some roses and a well wishing card

anything engraved is really nice and thoughtful. Things Remember is reasonable. Since you are his best friend, I think something a little more thoughtful would be nice. Engraved beer mugs with their names, or last initials on it. Is he your beer drinking buddy?? It would be appropriate. My husbands best friend gave us a large tortilla bowl, salsa, chips and tequilla. It was really cute and so appropriate from him.

A very useful book for both, your friend & his wife. It is written by a qualified doctor; is very informative, interesting, and funny but true!!
