Some of them do have steroids in them. Body builders take it because they want their bodies to be exaggerations of the normal. A far better thing to do is eat properly and take vitamins. Too much protein is not good for your body, especially your heart.

Protein powder is nothing like steroids. Isolated whey protein is just a form of natural protein that is refined down and easily digested. To put it simple, protein builds muscles and carbohydrates fuel the muscles. Anabolic steroids build muscles in a completely different way.
As for you other questions, yes all bodybuilders take protein powder. They intake 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. It would be impossible to eat that much chicken or tuna. And is protein powder bad for you? Do you drink milk or eat chicken? Those are both good sources of protein. There are different types of protein powder (whey, soy, etc.), because some people can't take whey (made from milk). So no they aren't bad for you

Protein powders are NOT steroids. A steroid is a synthetic form of the male hormone testosterone, and they're banned from use in the U.S. because of all the nasty side effects (shrunken testicles, erectile dysfunction, liver damage, fits of rage, etc.). Protein powders are just that -- powders made of specially made and specially balanced proteins that promote muscle growth SAFELY. There is no synthetic testosterone in protein powders.
And yes, protein powder is used extensively by bodybuilders. In fact, protein powder (whey protein concentrate is the most widely used) and creatine are the two supplements that have been scientifically proven to increase muscle mass to a greater degree in people who use them, as compared to people who don't. If you're trying to build muscle, I would encourage you to use protein powder.
When choosing a protein powder, you want to make sure that the powder has at least 20 grams of protein per scoop. Anything less than that and you're really wasting your money. You also want to make sure that the protein powder has as little fat in it as possible. One of the most popular brands is Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein, which you can find in most supplement stores and is also available on-line. Avoid GNC and Vitamin World brands -- they're overpriced and don't have enough protein in them.
Use protein powder for pre-and-post workout shakes. Your basic ingredients for workout shakes are skim milk, whey protein, rolled oats, and frozen fruit (with no sugar added). One hour before your workout, have a small shake that has an equal amount of protein and carbs -- you'll have to read the labels and do the math. For post-workout, if your goal is to add more muscle you'll want to have a medium-sized shake that has twice as many carbs as it does protein. If your goal is to maintain what you have but reduce your body fat, you'll want a medium-sized shake that has an equal amount of protein and carbs. It's VERY important to have a post-workout shake as soon as possible after working out -- go straight from the weight room to the dining room is the rule.

My partner is really interested in body building and a little while he started taking a powder that sounds remarkably similar, the bad news is he ended up having to go to a doctor because it dangerously increased his heart rate and made him feel very sick.
My advice...steer clear of anything like that its not worth risking your health.
