The term "World War" was coined in the early 20th century, some years before the First World War broke out. It was recognized that the complex system of opposing alliances—German Empire-Austria-Hungary-Italy vs French Third Republic-Russian Empire-United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland-Serbia—was likely to lead to a global conflict in the event of war breaking out. The fact that the powers involved had large overseas empires virtually guaranteed that a conflict would be global, as the colonies' resources would be a crucial strategic factor. The same strategic considerations also ensured that the combatants would strike at each others' colonies, thus spreading the fighting far more widely than in the pre-colonial era.

When asked what kind of weapons would be used to fight World War III, the physicist Albert Einstein replied:

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_war"

Actually, Einstein was wrong, after WW III, however it evolves, there will not be another World War for a long, long time; the industrial northern hemisphere will be blown back some 200 years at least.

Which one? World War I officially started in 1912 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, but the U.S. didn't get involved until 1914. It ended in 1918 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. World War II officially started in 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland. Again, the U.S. didn't get involved until December 7, 1941 after the bombing of the U.S. Naval Station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese. It ended in 1945 -- the Germans surrendered to Allied troops in May 1945 after the overrun of Berlin, and the Japanese surrendered in August 1945 after the second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki.
