What ever you decide, don't go alone. I'm a boat capt. and would not make that trip in anything smaller than a cruise ship.
To many things can go wrong. Think of this, the normal cruise ship travels at 25 mph, which covers 500 miles at night or 1000 miles per day, so 2 1/2 days to get their.
If you take a small boat less than 40 feet. I just bet you will run out of food & water in less than 2 weeks, and still not be even close to land. Remember most sail boat travel at 8 mph. So you can only go at most 192 miles per day. You do the math.
It takes more than a GPS to get their, it's also takes alot more skill and luck.
Only a person running from the law would try this.

It will be longest and most awful trip of your life, as an inexperienced boater. Find a boat, hire a charter captain that delivers boats and either go along for the ride and learning experience, or just have it delivered. Only a suicidal fool whould try to cross an Ocean with very little experience.

It is more than 2,500 miles from LA to Honolulu. I hope you aren't the only person on this boat. Talk to an experienced boater not to clowns on Yahoo! Contact the USCG.
Many things will go wrong. You could lose a sail, your mast, your rudder, or your way. You could develop a leak, the engine might break down, you might run out of fuel, your fuel may become contaminated, your fresh water may become contaminated, you could fall overboard, yada yada yada. Murphy's law will rear its ugly head and you won't have a WalMart to get new stuff from. Yours will be a lonely, painful death.
Don't go without an experienced crew.

Are you Crazy! No seriously instead of considering this and if you want to do the boating experience why not take a cruise to Hawaii? They go from LAX to Hawaii.
As others said even an experienced boater wouldn't do this, so I'm not quite even sure why you would consider this.

Not a good idea unless you are suicidal. this is not a trip to be testing your skills with. Even seasoned sailors will not attempt a crossing like that. Stick with day runs around where you live or fly to Maui and rent a boat while you are there.

Hawai'i is the most remote place on the planet. According to Dr. Barnes, author of "A concise history of the Hawaiian islands". Even experienced and highly trained captains will only travel across the Pacific during certain times of the year. Try travelocity.com or expedia.com to find a ship you can charter.
