Because it's addictive. People who smoke believe that they enjoy their cigarettes which is why quitting is so difficult. I quit 4 months ago and I've no intention of starting again. I'm not a reformed smoker (my best friend smokes) but it's not until you quit you realise how much it rules your life. However having said all that I do enjoy standing next to my friend while she's smoking - it's almost like having one myself. So old habits really do die hard!!! I WON'T START AGAIN.

I have a mate who smokes 60 a day. SIXTY!!!
Anyway smoking looks cool to kids and the adverts are aimed at getting young people to start smoking so that new smokers canj replace the ones who die of lung cancer.

Chemical addiction.
I smoked for 20 years, with any stupid excuse.. I enjoy it, it chills me out, I need it for my nerves, it helps me diet, it looks cool, it's not as bad for you as they say... all rather flimsy lies.
I was utterly addicted and the addiction brings with it all the hallmarks of any addiction. I was fooling myself... becasue I was an addict... lieing to myslef... the Niccoteen craving is incredibly strong, and rather than do without, I lied.
In the end, the fear of more throat operations and the fear of cancer, and heart failure was stronger than the addiction.... I loved smoking, but I wish I had never started.
It's a lot more complex that that.... but thats a good view from my experiance.

They think 'I'll see what its like', and then get addicted to the nicotine contained within the tobacco, therefore just continuing to satisfy the virtual desire or need that comes from within. This is why so many people smoke, and how tobacco company's gain so much money from slowly, but surely killing people. Some just can't be bothered to quit. They can't even be bothered about their own health!!

Good question. People smoke because they are addicted to it. They start it for fun..or to become "grown up" but they dosent grow much...Nicotine addiction is what prompts a person to smoke..they crave for it..and lights another cigarette. Its just like drugs..and the worse thing is..it affects even the nonsmokers. Smokers do harm to themselves by smoking and to others by making them inhale the poison..even if others dont like it.. " others dont have a choice" ..its sad..

That's his decision. He may stink, he may spend a lot of money on his habit and he may be jeapordising his health, but that's his choice.
Before all the smokers start whining about it, I'm an ex-smoker with an ex-80 a day habit, so don't make it out that I'm lying because I'm not - the health risks, and the social impact is already documented.

Becuase at first it looks cool, to look grown up, to fit in with your mates, it can give you a buzz, some enjoy smoking, it is a distraction if you are nervous or worried, and nicotine becomes highly addictive.
