many people in the west see islam as restrictive and feel that it takes away entitled freedoms.... i think this view is so hypocritical....

to be honest... as a Muslimah in the west i feel incredibly scared... a few weeks ago i was almost pushed in front of a train by a man shouting the word "terrorist"....

they claim to be civilized and they claim to be tolerant... but on sites like this many show their true colors.... you here what they are not yet brave enough to say in the streets....

people will call me a conspiracy theorist... but to me it resembles the beginnings of nazi germany

this is just my opinion

FREEDOM in the West means a person is free to worship at what religion he wants, work at a job he wants to, get an education, go where he wants and enjoy what he wants. But, the restrictions are that he hurt no one, and is willing to give everyone the same freedoms he has.

We are free to vote for the people we want to run the government. Ha! With Bush and his group in there------we did one bad job of it, I would say. Most of the American people feel he has done nothing but cause us problems at home and abroad. Most Americans cannot stand him, and will be so glad when he is gone. I guess this is one freedom we can really mess up at times. I didn't vote for him!

I would really like to know what you mean by the West is becoming the same (bad) as the rest of the world. That is, how you feel the rest of the world is bad.

Firstly, I have to say that although there is a sense of "freedom" in Australia, this freedom is under constant attack from capitalism and from our own government. The magority of Australian people are under the impression that they have certain "freedoms" such as that of "freedom of speech" and "freedom of mobility", but I am also aware, that these freedoms are becoming less and less, as our government becomes more and more conservatist in their idea's of social control.

"
Australia is committed to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 19 of the Declaration provides:

Everyone has the right of freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

However, only a small number of people in Australia own the Press. So this could well be a contradiction. It is not a simple question and there are not simple answers. I cannot speak for the entire Western world, and the "percieved" freedoms that I enjoy by living in Australia, where there are many different social and ethnic groups who have lived side by side and have not been "made" to give up their ethnic backgrounds or language is currently under attack by the current Liberal Government who wants to assimilate all Australian's under one umbrella. I do not think this is possible because, one good thing about living in Australia, is that it is so culturally diverse and has, up until recently, celebrated in this cultural diversity.
Whilst I am able to make these comments because I have a certain amount of "freedom" of speech and will not be shot or tortured by my Government for using this freedom, I am also aware, that unless people are aware of what freedoms, we are slowly giving away, or letting the government take from us, then when I say that this society is a free one, it is slowly changing as more and more of my freedoms are taken away.
For example, with more police powers, more people are injured when exercising their right to protest against decisions that impact on the people of a country, for which many people disagree to.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs

Freedom is the choice to learn, read, watch, love, wear, say, and sing basically whatever is natural for people to learn, read etc.
By preaching hatered and disinformation the mainstream Western (not to mention the Israeli media) is (together with the governments this media's journalists love in the West) spoiling freedom.

in the west we define freedom in economic terms. our freedom is freedom to spend money on frivolous bullsh*t. real freedom is being able to do whatever u want at any time u want but having the wisdom to know what to do and when to do it. wars are being fought so we can still buy vomit porn, heroin, fallafel, and a hooker at 4am all from the same guy. let freedom ring

this is really up to each individual to describe. this is the ability for an individual to do whatever they want with their free will as long as one does not infringe upon the free will of others and as long as the laws rules and mores of the culture and society in which one resides are not broken.

It appears, in the West, to be 'free for all freedoms', no holds barred. You are 'free' to abuse the 'others', you are free to abuse 'yourself', by discarding the clothes that dress you up, hide your shame, unlike the animals; you are free to indulge in un-natural sex; you are free to screen the movies like 'the last temptation of Christ'; you are free to disparage the elders of 'other faiths'; and you are free to forget the glorious name of The Lord and adopt instead, in your invocations, the translation in English and other European languages the name - word like 'God'... whereas you translate no one else's name. Indeed you are absolutely f r e e . in the West !
