Apart from smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, has anything else been proven to harm your unborn child?
Is there anything I should steer clear of when I do decide to convieve?

Hi, I agree with the other answers but would also add that Downs Syndrome has been proved to have a link with increasing maternal age (ie the older you are when you are pregnant the more likely you are to produce a Downs baby). There is also a type of Downs which is due to an inhereted genetic fault which can occur in babies of women of any age.
The web site below is well written and will give you lots more information.

Downs syndrome is to do with an extra chromosome there is nothing you can do about it when you conceive .But eat a good diet, ask your nurse at your doctors for a good diet yes as you say don't smoke or drink or take drugs just be in good health when you conceive also make sure your husband/partner is doing the same.THEN YOU WILL HAVE DONE YOUR BEST .And hopefully you will have a healthy baby.Good luck

Stay right away from alcohol. Evidence now suggests that the only right amount of alcohol is NONE. Even small amounts are harmful.

Eat lots of leafy greens, seeds, nuts, oily fish, fruit and veg.

Stay away from smoke, and other pollutants like paint fumes and household cleaning agents.

But on the other hand, don't worry too much. Do your best and then relax- negative emotions can be 'toxic' too!

All the best

I dont know if its "proven" as such, but stay away from unpasturised things, like cheeses etc. Dont eat shellfish. Make sure you take folic acid that prevents spinal bifida.
