I think it really depends on what you're interested in.
My most fantastic visit to Italy was to Rome and Sorrento; from Sorrento we visited Pompeii which was absolutely awesome! Sad too, to capture people at the moment of their terrible deaths, but amazing to walk around the town and see just how people lived then. Vesuvius too - the live and still smoking volcano is well worth a visit.
Hope this helps - whatever you decide, have a great trip!

Sicily, because of the
1. Weather
2. Views
3. History
4. Cost (much cheaper than the rest of Italy)
5. Not a lot of tourists if you stay away from Palermo and Taormina.
6. Food
7. Wine
8. Most importantly, the people.

If you have been to Italy before I would suggest a trip off-site the normal tourist streams.
I have had one summer in Calabria and two in Apulia, both wonderful places where you'll meet nice peoples and the best seafood in Italy!
Many alternative activities too, both at the clean sea or in the nationalparks in the inland.
Try it - You will not regret it!
You can find more alternatives at this site:

Have a nice trip!

Be an adventurer, go to each major spot in Italy. What seems great in the north, is also great, but different, in the south. But in the south, they drive crazier!

Verona has the oldest working coloseum in the world.
The Soave valley is close by - wine is inexpensive...some farmers sell their own stuff on the roadside.
naturally, Lago di Garda is not to be missed...
- my favorite place in that entire country...
the catacombs of Lago Di Como were nice...
but Garda...e bella

Sorrento is lovely, as you can use as a base and visit Pompeii and Capri which is fab. Venice is great for a day visit, Milan fab for shopping.
