Do they get mad because the dog enjoys it? How weird.
behind the ears is always the safest bet

Depends on the dog....
If a dog is a guard dog, duty dog never pet it under the chin or around the neck it will attack. This is how they are trained.
I notice some peeps pet our dogs (when that is the dogs let them in lol) by petting them hard. Like slapping the side of your leg. This our dogs do not like at all.
Let the dog make the first move. Maybe the dog has a spot she likes? Our saint Bernard when petted in certain spots will stick in and out his tongue, its so funny! He loves everyone. We are the only ones who pet our cow dog, he wont let strangers or company pet him. The massive scares most peeps, but he is a giant baby. He likes to make the first move if he wants petted by company. We have to tell company not to touch his ears, only those he trusts can do this. He must of had a bad experience with his ears? If a dog shows its belly he is summiting to you, our dogs would never do this with a stranger or someone they do not no real well.
So let her make the first move. Most peeps are real weird about there dogs, if our dogs wont let company in the gate, we wont either. If I am here on my own I will not go outside the gate either but will talk to the person through the gate. Usually I can calm the dogs down enough to be able to talk to this stranger.
You will do fine, ask your friends where the dog likes to be pet?

if the dog is old and set in his ways best stay away or ask about the pet. Showing interest is usually well received. Perhaps they will give you a proper introduction. Dogs usually like the chest area best.

Its not WHERE you pat the doggy its HOW you pat the doggy and with what. I recommend patting it with a nice brand new baseball bat........one of the metal ones so that way if you hear a "CLANG!" sound then you'll know you are patting it a wee bit hard....yeah?
Have fun......oh by the way buy yourself a good pair of running shoes before hand........just....because they are terribly comfortable......yeah.
