Carbon Copy and Back carbon copy. (I think!)

2006-10-05 21:35:04 · answer #1 · answered by Tatsbabe 6 · 0 1

I think I remember from my secretarial training that cc stands for 'carbon copy' and bcc stands for 'blind carbon copy'. A carbon copy was taken on a typewriter and was sent to someone other than the original addresee of the letter. A blind carbon copy was a further copy that was done and sent to a third party without the original recipient of the letter being informed. They originate from time when we didn't have wordprocessors and letters were typed on a typewriter - if you wanted copies, you put a sheet or sheets of alternate blue or black carbon paper and copy paper behind the original and then typed your letter, which would be copied to the subsequent pages behind. It was a pain if you made a mistake - tippex on all copies or you just ripped it out and started again!!!

The previous answers are correct, Carbon Copy & Blind Carbon Copy.

But as no one is using carbon paper anymore, the modern version has it as; Courtesy Copy, and Blind Courtesy Copy.

Carbon Copy and Blind Carbon Copy.

In the case of the blind carbon copy, it means whoever's name you put in there can read the email, but no one else in the adress field knows you sent it to them.
