Most player include Windows media player won't play all AVI if it doesn't have the right codec to play the file.
Install the K-Lite Pack 2.77 Full version in the link below and you should be able to play almost all the existing video files out there using the Media Player Classic that come with the Full Pack.

Check in that page and see what are the codec the pack include.
Media Player Classic is a highly recommand player a lot of people use.

Right click on the video, Open With, Choose Program. Make sure "Always use selected program to open this type of file" is checked. Select Real Player. It's also in your Real Player Preferences. Though I never use Real Player.. Another suggestion.. Invest in Windows Media Player CLASSIC. 100% better IMO.

VLC Media Player should be your choice if you want a player that plays practically all formats and does not install too many components into the Windows OS.
