I have been shaving my head for two months now and have had this problem ever since I started. Right in that area on the back where my head meets my neck, I get these horrible looking red bumps, most noticeable right after I give my head a shave. They seem to fade away as the days pass, but when I shave my head again, they come right back looking fresh. I have tried a lot of stuff. I was using this stuff called Bump Stopper 2 from Wal-Mart, but that did a lot of nothing. I wash the area everyday with both soap and facial cleanser. I even put skin soothing lotion on it. Nothing is working or even making a slight difference. Somebody out there must be familiar with this type of problem. Does anyone have a remedy to fix this situation? I take every precaution when shaving. I use a fresh razor, steaming warm water, and Edge shaving gel. I only use aftershave on the bumpy area. I think the alcohol helps for some reason. On the rest of my head I use skin lotion. Any help is appreciated.

this usually happens when you first start shaving an area that has never been shaved. pay attention and it will stop. make sure the bumps are completely gone before shaving over that area. gone all the way. instead of using lotions and colognes (they have chemicals in them that make sensitive skin react worse) get some baby powder. preferably Johnsons cornstarch
brand. I'm serious! use this instead- it will keep that area dry from sweat-which is also an irritant.
My only other suggestion would be investing in an aloe vera plant...you break off a leaf, squeeze the juice onto your skin, rub it in ...... it not only works for rashes, but also burns, bug bites, itching, scars, any wound on the skin that wouldn't otherwise require medical treatment

Bumps On Back Of Neck

Sounds like you're getting ingrown hairs. What happens is that because the hair there is so short, it gets caught under the skin and doesn't grow out of the skin, but grows within it. This happens especially if you have curly hair. It has nothing to do with how sanitary you are. It's just how your hair is. I have read about this for a male friend of mine before, and basically they say that you can probably get someone to sterilize some needle nose tweezers to pluck them out, but the best way to really keep them away is to keep your hair longer... sorry for the bad news... However, it would be good to make sure that your skin there is clean at all times so you don't develop an infection. Good luck!

Hair EVERYWHERE has a grain that you go with when you shave (with a blade) so going in that one direction may help, as may leaving a small hair tip above the surface of the skin so there's no in-growing. Tea tree oil is really helpful with skin iritations that have a fungal or bacterial factor so try a lotion containing it &/or aloe vera. Anti-razor burn lotions are ok too. A single blade is less likely to cause problems than a multi or electric just don't cut too close! Good luck!

Try shaving the opposite direction. It is called razor burn . You either have a dull blade by the time you do the back of your head or you are pulling the blade in the wrong direction of the hair growth.

yeah i had the same problem. The trick is to be very gentle on your neck. You can't scrape all the hair off. You'll have to live with a little bit showing.

My brother use to have that, red bumps.

He started getting better razors, and changing them often.
Eventually he got an nice electric razor, which has a cleaning dock to put it in... and while its sitting in dock, its soaking in alcohol.

In the meantime you should be cleaning off your razor with alcohol, BEFORE and AFTER use.

good luck

Well...if your like me...meaning if your black, there is no remedy because of your hair type. I know how you feel because I'm having the same problem, but I have ingrown hairs that I can't get out. Honestly, there isn't much you can do.
