I'm thinking that it represents torment and anguish, similar to the way you grind your teeth during sleep if you're wound up about something.

Its just a figure of speech. People in Hell will be in pain for eternity.

I don't agree that heaven and hell is a wishful thinking, or something people made up. How you spend your life on earth determines your eternity - will you be with God, or will you wish that you grasped the opportunities on earth that He gave you?

I think NO HELL is wishful thinking.
What do you mean by "we"?
I'm going to Heaven and going to get a new body.
Want to come along?

Oh, and are you wondering if you might not recognize someone you knew?

Criminals can and are forgiven both by victims, victims families and- God if they ask.
The Unforgiving wont get into Heaven.
And if I had a wicked aunt who I'm deep down sure probably went to hell, I guess I'd prefer not to think about it. I HAVE lost loved ones.
BTW, how come you think CRIMINALS werent loved ones?
Hell's it. No growth or loss. and YUP, will have eyes to look up and see and will really wish one had a chance to warn someone one sees that may otherwise soon be joining them in hell.

I totally agree with you.
Its like if you pass out you dont see anything, the next thing you know is you woke up like 20 minutes later and it only seems like 10 seconds has passed. thats the same thing i think happens when you die.

But on the other hand my Dad died 6 years ago and i would love to see him 18 years old again in heaven reliving his youth, because its depressing to think that his conciousness just stopped.

When we die, we are given new bodies. "And God will wipe away every tear from ther eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." - Revelation 21:4. This world is always fading and has Death. When Jesus returns he will defeat death. Now Jesus uses "gnashing of teeth" as a way to describe how we will feel. Hell is a place, but not like most "imagine" it to be. Think of hell as a place where we are disconnected from God. Now this life is an opportunity for us to choose what we want. Some of us want a relationship with God and some don't. God allows us to choose whether we want to be with him or not. Some people go through their whole lives not wanting anything to do with God, so he gives them want they want. He sends them to hell where they will be disconnected from God. Now, we are made to be connected with God, therefore we burn and we gnash our teeth because we desire to be with God. This scripture might help you get a better idea of how we are made. "1Now we know that if the earthly tent (BODY) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
6Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7We live by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad." - 2 corinthians 5:1-10. If you really want to understand God and wh he is read all of the bible. Sometimes we dont always understand everything, but if you pray and allow God to give us answers, He will. For God says in Isaiah 55:8-9, ""For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. " God is god and if he is smart enough to create everything in the world I don't think we can possibly understand or comprehend everything he does.

Maybe it's a figure of speech. Maybe we get turned into alligators in hell and all we can do is gnash and snap. I don't believe in heaven or hell but I can't prove its nonexistence to those who believe and I wouldn't want to.

In the real hell there are no teeth; and you get nothing to eat except corn on the cob.

There is no such thing as space in heaven or hell. Your soul just goes there. "gnashing of teeth" is just a metaphor. Like, it will be so painful, that one gnashes - or grinds - their teeth.
