My husband and I will be relocating to NYC soon. He will be working in lower Manhattan on the west side. Therefore we are also looking at places to live in New Jersey, we would like around a 30 -45 minute or so commute max. if that's possible. We will be looking to rent at first. So my two questions are: What are the safe/clean/nice neighborhoods to live in (most importantly safe) ? What are rents averaging roughly in those neighborhoods (for 1 or 2 BR, and some kind of parking)? Thanks!

Safe place?
For any safe and clean place you have to PAY top money like
Franklin Lakes,NJ. There are NO apartments there. To rent a house? I would say about $3500 or more.I live in Bloomfield NJ for the last 26 years and looooove it. It's about 20 min from NYC,by car and no traffic. Apartments here are about $900 and up1BR. Wayne(NJ) is another nice town, about 30 min from NYC. Growing very fast. One small BR i'd say about $1000 and up. Very good tansportation to NYC.

Manhattan is $2000/mo and up for a small 1 BR, $3000 and up for a small 2 BR. Hoboken/Jersey City is a little less and safe. Fort Lee/Fairlawn/Englewood is nice and safe, but is ~ 55-60 min commute to lower Manhattan. Edgewater/Cliffside Park is a little closer. Brooklyn close to the subway should bring you even further down (and reasonably safe). You don't need a car in Manhattan, parking is steep ($300+ per month). Cheaper to rent a car when you need it (e.g. Zipcar).

There are all kinds of places !
30-45 Minute commute ?? Look for a place with direct connection to the PATH train, for easy access to LM. Don't try to drive into the city during rush hour.
Try Craigslist.com for places.-
