I had heard all the horror stories about xanax, side effects and abuse, so I was concerned when my doctor prescribed it for me four months ago. But I honestly can't see that I've had any problems at all.
I take one 0.25mg tablet morning noon and night, rather than three at a time, which of course makes a big difference. And I've been careful not to drink alcohol as long as I'm on the drug.
I'll bet you haven't talked to a psychiatrist about the issue. They understand the possible need for xanax better than your family doctor does. If he/she won't prescribe, and you have mental health coverage, try a shrink.
Good luck.

Xanax is a very habit-forming medicine that can lead to drug abuse. It contains ingredients that many people found that they can derive from Xanax to make homemade illegal substances for recreational use. Dr's. now use certain code numbers and abbreviations so that their facility and other Doctors and Pharmacy's are aware that you have had say 2 out of three refills. That's your limit, no exceptions they classify medications and that one is a high-leveled one. If your doctor sees you becoming too dependent he will immediately take you off

i think you need to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. There is a variety of anti anxiety meds. Most are addicting physically not necessarily mentally. I was started on 6mg of Kloniopin a day several years ago. As I got better I took less and less, Now I take one a day. I do not understand getting hooked on these meds. They do though and they are dangerous and difficult to get off of

I was on Xanax many years ago and had no problem with it. Years later when I tried it again it caused manic-like episodes. I have been taking Clonazepam (Rivitrol) and it works wonderfully. It calms me down and allows me to sleep better. Of course meds affect people differently.
