You should make him something that has something to do with his interests and likes. That's what I did when my brother joined the Navy and was going to sea for six to eight months at a time. I made him a wooden plaque of his favorite cartoon character, and etched my signature on the back. It was something he could hang up, knowing his little sister made it just for him. I also wrote him a letter that he wasn't to read until he left. In it, I told him how much I would miss him, how much I loved him and how I looked forward to his safe return. This was during the 1st Iraqi "war". 15 years later, he still has that very letter and that plaque.

A chain or necklace that he can wear and know that a part of you is with him all during the time he's away. Maybe give him a memory box... a small box filled with paper, pens, envelopes, stamps. That way he can keep in touch about his adventures. Also include a few pictures so that he can have a picture to cherish.

a good knife is great while traveling, like a full featured swiss army one. if you can find it, a lead bag to store film in. airports will always want to x-ray (and ruin) film, if he's taking pictures with normal film it's awesome to have and will last a lifetime.
