On Wednesday evening, the gathering came to an untimely demise when, a minute into the remarks by the founder of the Minuteman Project, Jim Gilchrist, students stormed the stage, overturning tables and chairs and attacking Mr. Gilchrist and fellow Minutemen Marvin Stewart and Jerome Corsi. Having taken control of the stage, the students, led by the student chapter of the International Socialist Organization, unfurled a banner that read, in both Arabic and English, "Nobody is Illegal."

Don't worry . there are many more of us that will never let America be taken by foreigners. Any politician that supports these loonies won't be able to win an election. One California city had the spine to stand up to these punks and pass a new law.

The event you describe is a perfect example of the polarizataion of our political discourse today. Both sides are at fault.
What has happened is that our political "leaders" (read politial buffoons) provide us with sound bites instead of intelligent discussion. The extreme sound bite is more newsworthy than any other so that is what we get. That drives each side to more extreme positions.
We are at an unfortunate point where each side feels they need to stand by those idiotic, sound bite driven, positions.
The "Minutemen" try to blame all of our problem on illegal immigration across the Mexican border. Idiotic! The student protestors take the position that "Nobody is Illegal". Equally simplistic and idiotic!!
Now if the two sides would truly research their positions and sit down with open minds and honestly try to find a rational position, we might get somewhere. Of course, nobody would listen because it would require more than a sound bite.

It sounds like the students were reacting to the presence of a figure they don't agree with. It sounds like though that the approach may not have been the best one...I personally find much more strength and courage in non-violent protest.
Something somewhat similar happened at my college...during a job recruitment fair, military groups were present, and there were protests due to the discriminatory "don't ask don't tell" policy of the military. They're protest was non-violent though, and managed to meet the goal of having the military representatives leave the campus without any violence insuing.
I think generally, with issues as heated as immigration, people tend to react out of emotion before rationality. I don't necessarily think it's a matter of "not allowing free speech" as much as not wanting to hear someone who they feel is discriminatory and becoming quite upset at someone who appears to have such feelings.
I consider myself to be rather liberal on may of the "hot-button" political issues, and also could not see myself acting out in a violent way when I disagree. Then again, I'm able to separate emotion from thought, and others aren't.

Why are we giving education to illegals and people of other countries, when our own students are still paying for their education for years after they graduate? This country is a disgrace for not taking care of it's own citizens. Those students should all be expelled and sent back to their own countries. Columbia university certainly isn't educating students, if that is how they act.

It is like that on most college campuses in the US, and it is a typically liberal response. Liberals cannot stand the thought of someone speaking their OWN views and ideas. They thrive on the idea of "group-think", which is why most liberals can only spout the same lines over and over again rather than actually thinking through the full consequences of their plans.

They let him speak for a minute. When it was clear that he was being a total a**hole, they gave him the boot and said their piece.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Freedom of speech DOES NOT mean that you can say whatever you want where ever, without consequence. If you think it does, you're living in a fantasy world.

This is very typical of liberals (those protectors of free speech). Ann Coulter gets pies thrown at her, Bush gets shouted at, the list is so endless. When a idiot liberal comes to give a speech, most sane people just stay away and let them rant to an audience of one.
