I'd go with a Jeep Cherokee, the classic one not the grand Cherokee. You could probably find a mid to late 90's fire-bird or camaro for 5k. Just browse yahoo auto, but put low miles and find something you like then research the reliability.

For a cool, long lasting and a good car of 5,000 dollars, I would
suggest you to get a 5-year old Toyota Corolla 1.6GLS which
is reliable, high performance, low fuel consumption, easy to
drive and the least problematic car on the road.
No other car in its own class can rivalled that of the Toyota!
Don't wait any longer, get it today!

Mid 1990s Honda Prelude. Great styling, dependable, handles well, good power, fun to drive, and they get 25-30 mpg depending on how you drive.

I've owned two Preldudes (1988, 1993- still have) and enjoyed both of them.

try a late 90`s -early 2000`s SUV, they are cool, and will be usefull, and while they might like gas alot, gas prices are dropping, most from `98 to 2001 could be in your range, save for some higher end SUV`s,like land cruiser or range rover, and you can do alot with them,by way of customizing.
