" These things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him " - Proverbs 6:16
Examining the context and the rest of the scripture we see that there is a time to hate ( Eccl. 3:8), and that the bible is justified in teaching us to " hate the evil, [and] love the good" ( Amos. 5:15). " these ...things the Lord hates "; " A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that hatches evil plots, feet that race down a wicked path, a mouth that lies, a trouble-maker that sows discord in the family ".
Any one who has employed speech, signs, and subleties to devise mischief and sow discord has prostituted his potential for good beyond the point of no return.
" The Lord hates " ( v.6:16). In the final analysis, we cannot define God. The infinite cannot be reduced to the finite. However, we do know that " God is spirit [or life] " ( John 4:24); " God is light " ( John 1:5); and " God is love " ( 1 John 4:8). This means that WHEN God hates, He does so with due regard to His nature as Life, Light, and Love. When He expresses His nature as Life, He hates sin with absolute dignity - because " He is King of Kings - who alone has immortality " ( 1 Tim. 6:15-16). When He expresses His nature as Light, He hates sin with absolute purity - because He dwells " in unapproachable light " ( 1 Tim. 6:16). When He expresses His nature as Love, He hates sin with absolute jealousy - because the Lord God is a " jealous God, visiting the iniquity... of those who hate Him, but showing mercy... to those who love Him " ( Exodus 20:5-6). Divine jealousy is love's burning zeal to " do all to the glory of God " (1 Corin. 10:31).
If we are to be identified with the Lord of Life, Light, and Love, we also will have to " hate evil, [and] love Good " ( Amos.5"15). Under His Lordship, we must live out the abhorrence of sin by the power of the Holy Spirit Who alone can set us " free from the law of sin and death " ( Rom. 8:2). We have to remember, there are things to hate and times to hate.

he has a right to get angry. Look at this world thats been corrupted by us. Terrorism, lying, stealing, etc. If I were God I would be pissed 24/7. He gets jealous because the glory belongs to him not inanimate objects. He loved us so much that he provided a way for us to be reconciled with him even though we're a rebellious people.

He thinks of our nations as wives whom he loves. Worshiping false gods is equivalent to having sex with other people, in the act of prostitution no less.
So let's say you're married, and your wife has sex with ...say... yer boss from work. Doesn't that piss you off? Aren't you jealous?
If you're not angry and Jealous, you sir, do not love your wife.
Now as the case is with idolitry, Your wife claims she only did it because he offered her $11.53 and since you are such a poor provider and she needed the money, she had to have sex with him.
That is the insult God feels only because he loves us. Hell if he didn't love us that wouldn't bother him one bit.
Does that seem a little more logical, duhhhhhh,
step back and look at that.

Humans don't love bacteria. So we cannot feel jealous.
But then again, humans did not create bacteria, so we do not feel anything if they are ingrates, or if they squander their existence working harm instead of good. Since every human is the work of God's hands, and since we are his masterpiece, crafted in his own image, he cares how we turn out.

...Regarding the NIV rendering "idols," Jonah does not employ the more common Hebrew terms for idolatry, but instead chooses a word which is most often translated as "worthless, in vain, empty." Hence, the emphatic statement technically reads, "worthless of worthless!" It seems then that while he is speaking of idolatry, he is not formally referring to pagan religions, but rather his unworthy affections -- namely, his autonomy and the vain attempt to evade the call of God...
...I've had a ragged index card on my desk for almost three years now with a statement I copied from Dick Keyes' essay "The Idol Factory." It reads: "The attempt to not face the face of God or face ourselves as we are begins the process of idolatry." Keyes examines the nature of idolatry in the Scriptures and argues that it is essentially unbelief or God-avoidance. "An idol is something within creation that is inflated to function as a substitute for God," he writes. "... Since an idol is a counterfeit, it is a lie. Deception is its very identity."
Jonah's self-deception and refusal to face the face of God literally lead him from the depths of a raging sea to the heat of a scorching earth; but still he (and perhaps we?) will not listen to God. I am reminded of the verse in Job: "Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless (the same term Jonah uses for idolatry), for worthlessness will be returned to him" (15:31)...

It is God thats jealous and vengeful, its the people who wrote the pages of the Holy text that COULD HAVE added in their interpretation, also to keep the people in the faith. Where there is people there is support, every religion begins as a cult, but if you have enough people to make it a "norm" it suddenly becomes "mainstream"

snuggels and i share the same viewpoint on this. If you believe in the Bible, you'll know that God created us in His image, and loves us as his children.
How would you feel if your child you love grows up and tells you: "dad, im going to acknowledge another guy as my father, i no longer love you, i'd rather stare at a picture of this guy who doesnt exist in my life, and call him my dad. Bye bye to u"
Do you feel happy? Jealous? Angry?
God is an expressive God, he expresses His love for us just as He expresses his disappointment. He doesnt turn a corner and tell Himself how much He loves us, but shows it out EXPRESSIVELY. Whatever He felt about that, he just let it be known. Good enough?

I think that God can do it because He has the power to control and handle those emotions, When we have those we blow the whole thing out of proportion and so we automaticallly look at those things as being wrong, but I think that it is because humans were not created with the capacity to handle those type of emotions, but because of sin they have been thrust on us and we have done so many bad things with them that they have become deadly.

It's just bible propaganda, written and revised by men to try and control people using the so called fear of god. Anyone using logic and reason ( unlike the answerer above me) should figure out how ridiculous the belief in religion is.
