Both hurt a lot. Somebody close to my heart (relative) just recently divorced. His wife left him. The way he put it - when someone leaves, the invisible strings that connected you get torn. For some, they get torn off close to the heart, for some they brake off far away from the heart but keep dragging behind. Both hurt.

If truly in love with the person you are leaving it is definitely harder to be the leaver. You then live with the knowledge that you cannot be with that person you love so much AND the knowledge that they are hurting too.... its a double-whammy

Being the one left behind DOES rip you apart though.... hard to be on either side of that situation.

do you love the person?

i think the hardest thing in life is getting to be with the person you love. true love has many obstacles one must overcome to obtain. everybody wishes that true love comes about gracefully. that there shouldn't be any problems when the two gets together. if true love has the power to make things perfect, then the hardship must come beforehand.

Being left alone, because you didn't ask for it, you're not left with any choices and you have no control.
